The Four Steps of Hotep and 1st Saturdays – news from David Roach

A note from Morehouse Man David Roach, who currently serves at the President of the San Fransisco Bay Area Morehouse Alumni Association.

hotep_david_roachIn 2009, I was so  honored to receive “The Community Service Award” from the Morehouse Alumni Association.  During that time, we were receiving some accolades  from our Mo’ Better Food Program, which basically connected African American farmers to the food needs of the West Oakland community through farmers’ markets and direct distribution to restaurants and to  eventually establish a cooperative grocery in the community.

During those days, our program was featured in The Black Enterprise, NPR, The Sierra Club, The Oakland Tribune, USA TODAY, etc. I  was often asked how we did what we did? Why we did what we did? and where do we go from here? So after a while of answering these questions, I decided to put it all in handbook that I call, “The Four  Steps of Hotep – The Educational Kit to build Healthy Economics in Any Community.”

Hotep means peace. And years  ago we created a character named Hotep to become the mascot of Mo’  Better Food and now the mascot of building Healthy Economics. The Four Steps of Hotep  illustrates the four programs of The Familyhood  Connection (our 501 C-3 corporation funded in 1994 with a mission of  promoting programs that bring the generations together) to build Healthy Economics.

I write you today because one of the four programs, 1st  Saturdays has recently launched. 1st Saturdays is what we call the  official monthly volunteer day.

Basically, we are targeting schools/ and some urban farmers to register their school/ farm on the site: http://1staturdays.com/events and we assist in spreading the word to other volunteers to increase the success of these projects.

Last month, representatives of the S.F. Bay Area  Morehouse Alumni Association came out to support and have since decided  to adopt the project not only as a day of service, but also the evening we are now hosting our meetings.

I share the above with a vision of all of our chapters  being able to not only register 1st Saturdays events in their area, but  to lead this campaign, globally.
