About Brailsford Reese Brazeal, Ph.D. ’27

Chair, Dean of Men, Professor, Author and Civil Rights Activist
Distinguished Former Academic Dean, Department Chair, Dean of Men, Professor, Author and Civil Rights Activist Brailsford Reese Brazeal (1905-°©‐1981) received his B.A. from Morehouse College, graduating with honors in 1927. He earned an M.A. from Columbia University and became academic dean and professor of economics at Morehouse in 1928. After he received his Ph.D. in economics from Columbia in 1942, Brazeal revised his dissertation for publication as The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (1946).
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ’48 took one of Brazeal’s courses at Morehouse, “Freshman Lectures,” in his first year, September 1944 -°©‐ June 1945. As a Morehouse student, he participated in the Atlanta chapter of a Georgia interracial student group that Brazeal had helped organize in 1926 or 1927.
Dr. Brazeal was born in Dublin, GA. He attended high school at Georgia State College in Savannah and Macon’s Ballard Normal School, finishing secondary school at Morehouse Academy in 1923. Brazeal obtained his B. A. from Morehouse College, graduating with honors in 1927. He earned an M. A. from Columbia University and became Academic Dean and Professor of Economics at Morehouse in 1928.
After he received his Ph.D. He served as president of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the National Association of Collegiate Deans and Registrars. For two, years he was a member of the executive committee of the American Conference of Academic Deans and as vice-president of the Association of American Baptist Educational Institutions.
Brazeal was affiliated with the American Economic Association; the American Academy of Political Science; the Southern Sociological Society; the Advisory Council of Academic Freedom Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union; the NAACP; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; Sigma Pi Phi, (Boulé); Delta Sigma Rho; and Atlanta’s Friendship Baptist Church. He was a member of the board of directors of Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association of Atlanta and the board of Southern Regional Council.
Brazeal received many special honors, including a listing in Who’s Who in America and unanimous election to honorary membership in Phi Beta Kappa by Delta Chapter of Columbia University in June 1959.
