300 Men of Morehouse – oh the difference $300 can make

Greetings brothers,

It’s that time of year again when we begin to galvanize support among our alumni brothers in support of our 300 Campaign which began two years ago.  To date we have raised more than $50,000 that has went directly to aid over 40 graduating seniors.

As we approach this year’s graduation on May 19, 2013 we are exceptionally excited as we host President Barrack Obama.  This historic engagement has most certainly served as a call to action to the alumni community; but, Morehouse has needed the help of her alumni since her inception.  And more often than not alumni have risen to the occasion and achieved great things.

As I considered our institution’s greatness, I was pleased to find a quote from President Obama that lends some insight into his perspective of greatness.  The following is from his 2009 inaugural address:

“Greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted, for those that prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor — who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.” –President Barack Obama

The current senior class of 520 plus graduates anxiously awaits the opportunity to venture out into the world and make their mark.  Getting to greatness is a matter of commitment and hard work.  We as alumni know this to be truth.  And so do our future alumni brothers, the senior class of 2013.  We have an opportunity to help them start on that path to greatness.  For those of you who will not be able to attend this historic occasion, you can still be a part of this once in a lifetime moment by supporting our seniors with a small donation that will yield immeasurable results.

We are looking for 300 Morehouse Men to give a minimum of $300 dollars each, so that we can raise $90,000 dollars to apply to the accounts of those students who are eligible and demonstrate academically that they want to be Morehouse Men.   Last year we raised an impressive sum in only two weeks.  So I am encouraged and excited about what we will do this year.

And after commencement we need to proactively embrace our new brethren and get them involved in our chapters not only as members, but also as leaders.  We must become mentors to them as they make decisions about their careers and their lives.  We need to truly bind ourselves to one another and strengthen the brotherly ties we so often sing about.  Let’s step up to the challenge and do for them what we wanted others to do for us when we were in their positions.  Let’s ensure that no graduating senior be denied his crown.

Please send your donation of $300 or whatever amount you can contribute. Some of you I know will go beyond the ordinary and donate $1,000 and some even $3,000.  The Association stands ready to assist you in any way possible.

Thank you my Morehouse Brothers for making a difference and demonstrating your support.  I look forward to seeing you at Commencement.

Sincerely,

Kevin R. McGee ‘93

President
