Dear Morehouse Brother:

Today marks my first official day as the 11th president of Morehouse College.  I look forward to hearing  from you and seeing many of you during and beyond our Founder’s Day activities in February.

I have the highest aspirations for Morehouse! During the first 100 days of my administration, we will refine and trumpet our value proposition.  Students, their parents and others must know that Morehouse is their very best investment.  Clarifying that is precisely what gives me a sense of pride and energy about returning to my alma mater.  As you might imagine, I am also motivated to put into practice a number of key HBCU advancement concepts that inspired me before and during my tenure as executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs.

You are well aware that institutions like Morehouse face big challenges. Decreasing enrollment, the rising cost of an education and the fierce competition for money and students are common issues among liberal arts colleges across the nation.  We are in a class of institutions that must find creative and innovative  ways to operate and educate.

The higher education landscape is changing, forcing many colleges and universities to experiment with new business models.  Morehouse must change as well.  Academically, we will create an environment where faculty and students can do their best work.  Administratively, we will develop a culture of operational excellence resulting in customer-focused leadership, accountability and data-driven decision making.

Goals like these will ensure that Morehouse College realizes the kind of sustainable success that places us among the best liberal arts colleges in the country. Our institution must remain relevant and progressive in educating and producing men, particularly African American men, prepared to lead in a global society.

We all have a role to play in ensuring that Morehouse moves beyond merely having a solid reputation, and embraces its destiny of being a true, world-class academic powerhouse! We cannot get there without the help of our alumni family.  I know that many of you may be interested in hearing about new ways to engage and invest in the campus.  My plan is to invite you to see us in a warmer, brighter light.

We need your help, and I want to give you better reasons to share with us your considerable resources.  We will earn your trust and investment.  Stay tuned for that … and trust it, too!

In the Spirit of being steadfast, honest and true,

John Silvanus Wilson Jr. ’79
