Morehouse College is pleased to announce it’s plans for
Founder’s Week 2013
Parent’s Weekend and
25th Annual “A Candle in the Dark” Gala.
Celebrating the 146th Founder’s Day Anniversary and the 25th Annual “A Candle in the Dark” Gala
Each February, during Morehouse’s annual Founder’s Week celebration, the College’s alumni, friends and supporters gather for a memorable event, the “A Candle in the Dark” Gala. The Gala, which takes its name from the book that officially chronicles Morehouse’s history, serves as one of the College’s major annual fund-raising activities. Its goal is to generate revenue for the institution’s endowed scholarship fund.
The black-tie event is designed to highlight the College’s tradition of producing leaders, showcase the oratorical skills of Morehouse students and pay tribute to nationally acclaimed African Americans who are pioneers and leaders in their respective fields. Honorees are presented with either a “Bennie” or a “Candle” award.
Bennie awards, bestowed upon alumni, offer recognition in the categories of service, achievement and trailblazing. The award is named in honor of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, who served as Morehouse’s president from 1940 to 1967.
Candle recipients, who are not Morehouse graduates, are honored for excellence in a variety of fields including the arts, athletics, business, education, entertainment, government, law, medicine, the military, religion, and science and technology.
The Gala has grossed more than $7.6 million since its inception, with proceeds benefitting the Morehouse College General Scholarship Fund.
